Imposing an Amusement Tax:

September 3, 2019 – Juniata Township enacted Ordinance No. 2019-1 for the purpose of collecting an amusement tax on recreational activities within the township. The Board of Supervisors chose not to implement the tax until it had a better understanding of the recreational activities offered within Juniata Township.

Hours have been spent assessing satellite imagery and gathering data so that we could accomplish a fair implementation of the tax process. A copy of the ordinance is available in the “Resources” section of this website. Click on “Ordinances”.

Our assessment has concluded that if Juniata Township has an industry, it is in the form of recreational camping, and we are planning to implement the tax at the end of 2022. Our discussions now are intended to inform those individuals involved in the business of providing recreational camping so that they may prepare for a 2023 implementation. Recreation Camping is the focus but represents only one aspect of the tax.

An “AMUSEMENT” is defined as: All manner or form of entertainment, diversion, sport, pastime or recreation, including but not limited to trade shows, craft shows, theatrical performances, operatic performances, silent or sound motion pictures, exhibitions, boat rentals, bike rentals, guided fishing, camping, carnivals, circuses, cruises, shows, concerts, fishing tournaments, lectures, slot machines and other gaming devices, racing events other than thoroughbred horseracing, auto racing events, sport events, swimming or bathing pools, vaudeville shows or sideshows, ice rinks, dancing, billiards, golf, athletic contests, and similar exhibitions, within the Township of Juniata for which admission is charged or paid.

More information will follow as we understand the steps needed to implement the tax.
